Why Your Rheumatology Care Matters
Rheumatology is a specialty of internal medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases that affect the joints, muscles, bones, and connective tissues. While arthritis is perhaps the most familiar, rheumatologists manage over 100 distinct conditions, including:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus)
- Gout
- Osteoporosis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Vasculitis
- Sjögren’s syndrome
“I firmly believe in treating patients as individuals, not just as a set of symptoms or diagnoses.” Dr. Lai explains. “They are not just a number. Every person who walks through the door has a unique story, and it’s essential to approach care with empathy, respect, and a commitment to truly listening. This belief drives me to provide compassionate, patient-centered care that prioritizes both medical needs and overall well-being.”
Contributions to Rheumatology
Dr. Lai has served as Principal Investigator on multiple groundbreaking studies, including the MIRROR trial investigating KRYSTEXXA® for uncontrolled gout and long-term studies on secukinumab for axial spondyloarthritis and radiographic progression. He has also collaborated with global pharmaceutical leaders like Novartis and AMGEN and presented abstracts at major conferences including EULAR 2024.
In line with the clinic's mission to expand access to comprehensive specialty care in the state, Dr. Lai’s currently leading focused initiatives will bring multidisciplinary care, and advanced therapies to the community.
“I am committed to staying at the forefront of medical advancements and integrating innovative approaches that improve patient outcomes. I would like to further focus on osteoporosis and gout. I am hoping to establish osteoporosis and gout centers of excellence. These are seemingly common diseases that are frequently neglected. I have done research in lupus, ankylosing spondylitis and gout, so I am also interested in these areas,” he notes. “I am hoping to establish clinical trials in several diseases through HHWC soon.”
A Passion for Movement and Community
Dr. Lai’s passion for wellness also extends beyond the exam room. A longtime advocate for physical activity and community health, he founded and led both a Tai Chi Club and a Badminton Club in Great Falls, Montana, and currently serves as Commissioner of the Badminton Division for the Big Sky Games.
“Movement is medicine,” Dr. Lai says. “I engage myself in various sports as much as possible. I have organized a Tai Chi and a Badminton Club in Great Falls, MT and I am hoping to find people who share similar interests here in Gillette, WY. I play indoor and outdoor sports, and I also love to go fishing sometimes.”
Known for his thorough, transparent communication and dedication to education, Dr. Lai empowers his patients by ensuring they understand their conditions and treatment options. He describes the most rewarding part of his work as “witnessing the positive impact and the clinical improvements in my patients, whether it’s alleviating pain, improving quality of life, or simply providing reassurance during a difficult time.”
He believes deeply in shared decision-making and emphasizes holistic wellness, addressing physical, mental, and emotional health together. His clinical motto is inspired by Patch Adams:
"You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you, you’ll win, no matter what the outcome."
Dr. Lai is now welcoming new patients seeking care for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions.
