Hoskinson Health & Wellness Clinic Performs First Cataract Surgery
Mar. 12, 2025, [Gillette, WY] — Hoskinson Health and Wellness' Ophthalmology Clinic recently performed its first cataract surgery, a common yet life-changing procedure that offers one of the most effective ways to restore clear vision.
Sharon, the clinic’s first cataract surgery patient, sought out treatment after noticing significant vision problems in her left eye.
What Is a Cataract?
A cataract occurs when the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurred vision, glare sensitivity, and difficulty seeing at night. Cataracts develop gradually and can significantly impact daily activities.
What Does Cataract Surgery Involve?
Cataract surgery is a highly effective, minimally invasive procedure that restores vision by replacing the eye’s clouded lens with a clear artificial lens (intraocular lens (IOL) ).
Q: When did you realize something was wrong with your vision?
A: At work, I spend a lot of time on the computer. My left eye started getting fuzzy, and I couldn’t see the screen clearly. I couldn’t drive at night because of the glare from headlights. If someone was right behind me, I had a really hard time seeing. So, I thought, “This is it.” I went to have my glasses checked, and the doctor confirmed I have cataracts.
Q: How did you find Dr. Navon?
A: I looked up ophthalmologists in Gillette online, and Dr. Navon popped up. I really liked what I read about him- his experience, his background. He’s been doing this for over 30 years, and that gave me confidence.
A Comprehensive Eye Examination

The Ophthalmology clinic, led by board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Sam Navon, conducted a full eye examination to assess Sharon’s vision and determine the best course of treatment. These included:
- Visual Acuity Test: Sharon’s right eye had normal vision (20/20), but her left eye was significantly impaired (20/200).
- Glare Test: Simulating nighttime driving conditions, her left eye tested at 20/80, confirming the presence of cataracts.
- Slit Lamp Examination: Dr. Navon identified substantial clouding of the left lens, indicating the need for surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
Dr. Navon discussed intraocular lens (IOL) options with Sharon, explaining how different lenses could enhance her vision. She opted for a 20.5D lens designed to reduce her dependence on reading glasses while maintaining clear distance vision.
The Procedure
The procedure lasted approximately 20 minutes and involved:
- A small incision to access the cataract.
- Use of ultrasound wave to break up and remove the lens fragments.
- Placement of a new artificial lens to restore vision.
Q: Were you worried about going into surgery?
A: I was a little concerned but when you go in and you come out quickly, that's pretty good. Dr. Navon talked me through everything he was doing. I felt a little pressure, but it wasn’t painful. Before I knew it, it was over.
Sharon’s Advice for Others Considering Cataract Surgery
Sharon returned for a follow-up the next day, her vision improved significantly, and she continues to see Dr. Navon for routine check-ups. She may undergo surgery on her right eye in the future.
Q: What advice would you give someone considering cataract surgery?
A: Go for it! The way it makes your vision come back is amazing. I’m still wearing the glasses I had before, and Dr. Navon told me not to change them until we decide what to do with my right eye. I see him in a few weeks, then again in three months, and then another three months. It’s worth it.
Q: Looking back now, is there anything you wish you had done differently?
A: I might have found somebody sooner, but then I wouldn’t have found Dr. Navon. So, no, not really. I’m really happy with him. I’m glad he’s in Gillette.
