Meet Carmen Toman, Pediatric Specialist at Hoskinson Health

Sep. 11, 2025 [Gillette, WY] —When parents step into a pediatrician’s office, they’re searching for someone who is able to see their child as a whole person. For Dr. Carmen Toman, DO, this vision has shaped every aspect of her career.

“Young people and their families are my favorite population to work with," she says. "They give me purpose in my medical career.”

Caring for Families

Dr. Toman’s motivation to care for children began long before she earned her medical degree. A double major in forensic science and Spanish, combined with a minor in chemistry, primed her medical curiosity and love for connecting across cultures, which was deepened by her time studying abroad in Chile, serving families from multilingual backgrounds.

By 2018, she had earned her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from Kansas City University of Medicine, followed by a residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She became board-certified in pediatrics in 2021 and through ECHO Autism, further trained in diagnosing autism in young children. This specialty training helps physicians become competent in diagnosing autism in younger children, especially when a specialty referral may not be an option.

In addition to or guiding families as they seek care for children on the autism spectrum, Dr. Toman has a special passion for supporting new mothers as they adjust a new lifestyle. "I have had experience working in a newborn nursery, so I care very much about mothers as they welcome a new life into the world, especially helping them with breastfeeding issues."

As an osteopathic physician, she also incorporates Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) — a hands-on approach that supports mobility, growth, and wellness in children. “I have found it very helpful for several of the little ones I care for,” she explains. “It allows me to approach a patient or problem with a more comprehensive and open mindset.”

At the heart of Dr. Toman’s practice is communication. She believes that open, honest conversations are essential to building strong treatment plans.

“If patients feel they can’t tell me important information, my plan may be incomplete,” she says. “Sharing information openly with each other helps create a comprehensive plan that can be completed with mutual trust.”

She also sees her role as a source of encouragement. “I’m my patient’s cheerleader,” she adds. “I often remind them of the good work they are doing, despite how small or trivial it may seem.”

A Quick Glimpse Into Dr. Toman’s World

“My husband is formerly a university professor and does consulting work for school districts and state educational agencies. We have a dog named Sadie. We enjoy spending time together, especially cooking and travelling. I have a love for cross-stitching and crafting and enjoy gardening. I also spent time studying abroad in Chile and am fluent in Spanish, and I greatly enjoy working with families from various multilingual backgrounds.”
