Pediatrics

Carmen Toman, DO is a board-certified pediatrician whose clinical experience spans newborn care, autism diagnostics, developmental pediatrics and parental education. She embraces a holistic perspective to caring for children and supporting their families through each stage of development.

Originally from Nebraska, Dr. Toman studied forensic science and Spanish at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln before earning her medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. She went on to complete her pediatric residency at the University of Missouri–Columbia, which included specialized training in pediatric nephrology, rheumatology, infectious disease, dermatology, pulmonology, and cardiology. She was recognized with the Resident Teaching Award, selected by medical students for her outstanding mentorship.

Dr. Toman has served in multiple pediatric clinics across Lincoln, Nebraska, performing well-child checks, sick visits, autism diagnosis and intervention, and procedures including frenotomies, abscess drainage, and phlebotomy. Her experience also extends to school-based medicine through Medicaid in Public Schools (MIPS) chart review. Through specialized training with ECHO Autism, she has also designed diagnostic protocols for autism assessments in clinical practice and is certified in STAT (Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers).

As an educator and speaker, Dr. Toman has gone on to deliver medical presentations on pediatric urinary tract infections, fluid resuscitation and management, and evidence-based approaches to pediatric care. Her early research on parasitology and burial archaeology is published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.

In her practice, Dr. Toman integrates osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) into care plans and sees great value in understanding what’s going on in a child’s home, school, and social environment.

Having spent time studying abroad in Chile, as well as working with families from various multilingual backgrounds, Dr. Toman carries forward her love of language and cultural exchange into her daily life. Outside of her love for work, she enjoys cross-stitching, crafting and gardening. She also likes spending time cooking with her husband, and together with their dog, Sadie, go out on new adventures.
