Hyperbaric oxygen therapy
This innovative therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized environment, opening avenues to holistic healing and rejuvenation.
Understanding hyperbaric therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is not just about breathing pure oxygen; it's a science-backed approach that elevates your oxygen levels to expedite healing. In our clinic, the therapy involves a pressurized environment, allowing increased delivery of oxygen for healing and recovery.
Beyond its origins in treating decompression sickness, HBOT has proven efficacy in addressing various conditions, including:
- Diabetic wounds that do not respond to other treatments after 30 days
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Cyanide poisoning
- Reduced blood flow in the arteries, acute or traumatic
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Bone Infections (osteomyelitis) if they don’t respond to other treatments
- Flesh-eating disease (necrotizing soft tissue infection)
- Gas bubble trapped in blood vessels (gas/air embolism)
- Actinomycosis, a chronic infection
- Crush injuries
- Gas gangrene
- Delayed radiation injury
- Serious infections
- Air bubbles in blood vessels
- Wounds challenging to heal
How does hyperbaric oxygen therapy work?
In the hyperbaric chamber, the air pressure is elevated 2 to 3 times higher than normal. This enables your blood to carry an abundance of oxygen, creating a powerful catalyst for healing. The extra oxygen not only combats bacteria but also stimulates the release of growth factors and stem cells, fostering a healing response.
Your body's tissues require ample oxygen to function, especially when injured. HBOT increases the oxygen-carrying capacity of your blood, promoting enhanced tissue oxygenation. With repeated sessions, the sustained benefits contribute to normalized tissue oxygen levels even after the therapy concludes.
Why consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Health care providers may recommend HBOT for various conditions, including:
- Severe anemia
- Brain abscess
- Burns
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Non-healing wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers
- Vision loss, sudden and painless
What to expect during your hyperbaric oxygen therapy
Typically lasting about two hours, the therapy is conducted on an outpatient basis. During the session, you may experience a temporary feeling of fullness in your ears, similar to the sensation during air travel.
To experience the full benefits of HBOT, multiple sessions may be recommended, depending on your medical condition. This therapy is often part of a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your unique needs.
Risks
While complications are rare, potential risks include middle ear injuries, temporary nearsightedness, lung collapse, seizures, and, in certain circumstances, fire due to the oxygen-rich environment.
